Juri Arisugawa

Adolescence of Utena

I must have a thing for tragic bitches.
I’ve loved Juri since I first saw the Adolescence of Utena movie probably 10 years ago. She is charismatic and willful, but also very vulnerable and insecure, which makes her a realistic and relatable character. I was asked to make Juri to wear with some friends, and even talked Mostflogged into wearing Shiori if I styled her wig, and ended up tracking down a gold rose photo pendant. We got so lucky going to the San Jose rose gardens and finding perfectly color coordinating flowers in bloom, since the show revolves around symbolism of roses.

The jacket was made from a deep orange amaretto with red bias tape that I patterned myself, with black wool sleeves from the leftovers of another costume, satin stitched. The epaulets are made from gold lame, craft foam and gold trim. Pants were borrowed from Jet who really saved my ass since I forgot to pack mine, and sword borrowed from WindoftheStars. The wig was a lace front from Arda Wigs, with the curls styled using latex glue, toilet paper rolls, and styling gel, I’m quite proud of the natural but accurate look of them.
